    Best. New Year. Ever.

    posted Wednesday, 2 January 2008

It was magic. It was way too fast and way too short. The drive down was way too rainy, but we got there, Middle Son delivered in time for work Sunday and Friend delivered to her fiance (hereinafter "Romeo"). New Orleans was crawling with the Hawaiians, unanimously judged to be among the nicest, most generous and most welcome tourists the city has ever seen. The Georgians arrived with us, a series of SUVs bearing "G" magnets and antenna flags (driving way too fast for conditions). There was a fight in a very neighborhoody bar called Lotsa-Luck and a gathering around the end of the bar for dinner and drinks with a bunch of Romeo's high school buddies (these folks are in their 50s now) at Lakeview Harbor. It ended with a tired hustle home New Year's Day night, exhausted with a cold, but very, very happy.

I remember last year posting about the Psycho Therapist's notion of consecrating the New Year and I can't help but think of it as 2008 begins. While I missed visiting with my dear blogger friends (I got a short visit with Adrastos and talked to Dangerblond twice), I had the time of my life, spending New Year's Eve as a guest, member of a party of six, in the center of the upstairs window overlooking the courtyard at Commander's Palace. Oh. My. God. All dressed up in thrown together evening wear (thanks, Kim, for pointing me in the right direction for the perfect black lace top that made it all work) with a most exceptionally gracious host, I couldn't believe it was really happening. He was greeted by name when we walked in the door, and again all along the way as we passed through the kitchen and up the stairs to our table. I felt like a believing child on Christmas morning. In the middle of the Turtle Soup the trio of musicians visited our table. With the bass within reach on my left and the clarinet (also within reach) just beside the banjo-playing singer, they struck up "Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans?" and I couldn't help myself. I cried. It was a perfect evening. After twenty some-odd years of staying in on New Year's Eve, considering it "amateur night", I did something really different (really, really different, for me). Maybe it's a sign of change.

The last three months of 2007 were hard. The KnockingShitDownCo lost a founding partner after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Sister Bel, with whom I live, was diagnosed with the same disease. Money's tight and a lot of people are depending on me. I am heading into 2008, for lack of a better word, tired. But, filled with gratitude to Friend for encouraging me to go, to Romeo for introducing me to his wonderful friends and most especially to the one of them who was our host, I did something different this New Year's Eve and it was magic.

May 2008 be the Best Year Ever. Happy New Year, y'all. Peace. Out.

I didn't know that Hawaiians made good tourists. Perhaps I should reevaluate my position--I spent the whole game wondering why they took the "Rainbow" out of their mascot. That should probably be a resolution; I always get hung up on minutiae that nobody else cares about.

They took the "Rainbow" out of "Rainbow Warriors" because of its associations with Greenpeace and/or with the gay rights movement, depending on who you ask. I'm glad the Hawaiians came out in great numbers to see the Sugar Bowl.

Glad you had a happy New Year's Eve. Be well, madame.

My NEW YEAR consisted of waiting as the clock swept around the world e mailing my friends in far off places as the NEW YEAR dawned with them. Then I watched the ball drop in Times Square and hit the sack. Time was when I would have went to some expensive club and got stinking drunk and managed to start a fight with my significant other and spent New Year's day nursing a massive hangover. Much better this way, ha ha JWL

Capt., I hope we both get our wishes! So far, so good. Happy New Year to you too, darlin'. You're the best!

Zen & Leigh, I learned over at Adrastos' place that the word "Hawaiians" refers to "natives" of the island rather than residents, who are considered residents of Hawaii (or something like that). All of the above were out in force and much appreciated in New Orleans. I felt terrible for them for getting such an ass-kicking, regardless of what kind of warriors they might be.

Laurie, I hope it's good to you too!

John, that sounds like most of mine. I also happen to know that you went out for your New Year's Day tradition and that it's a very productive (ambitious?) one indeed, so don't sell yourself short. AND, just in case there's any confusion, I didn't get drunk at all. I did have a little champagne but I remained a perfect lady all evening. No dancing on tables for me. I promise.

Thanks so much to all y'all for stopping by. I hope everyone continues to have a prosperous, happy & healthy 2008. :)

H'lo Soph. It sounds like your year got off to a terrific start - that's quite the high-class entry. May 08 be a blessing to you.

...and I've never had turtle soup.

Thanks, Mary. I hope so too! You too, Catty. Happy New Year, ladies and thanks so much for stopping by.

Y'know, Fool, the soup was chosen with some trepidation. My traveling companion opted for the lobster bisque as being a more humane first course. I was heading in that direction until our host recommended I try the local specialty, which made perfect sense to me. There were multiple moments during the evening when I was keenly aware that I was dancing with the dark side, ringing in the New Year with, well, Republicans. Looking at turtle soup sites online, I've learned that my extension of carnivorousness could have been worse. At Arnaud's the turtle soup is made with veal broth. ;)

Happy New Year, darlin'! Thanks for stopping by. Am I missing something or have you disabled comments on your site?

Yeah, Soph, there have been a few format tweeks. Changes. It just is what it is. I'll still stop by, and catch up with you here. All's good.

    ;)

Hmmm.... I hope it's change from happy causes and that you haven't acquired a stalker or some such yuck. I'm glad to know you'll still be stopping by. I'd love to know something about that amazing picture of the moon reflection that's up there now.

All's good, Soph. Really good. It's mostly a matter of busy. I have so much going on with the transitions and changes before me that I just don't have the time to give the blog its due right now. I am currently using the blog as a portfolio for creative tidbits...a desktop...and the rants and such have been archived. When/if I get the chance to write (posting will be sporadic), I want to spend the time exploring the creative & personal...which is not really open to explication.

Much going on. Have a great week!

Baby, it really is all good. That's the beauty of the blog: it's whatever we want it to be and the rest of the world can go pound sand. It's a desktop filled with beautiful words and pictures, that's for sure. :)
